About the Course

The course offers a deep exploration of how emotions are expressed and understood across different languages and cultures. This course is ideal for students, educators, linguists, and professionals interested in the intersection of language, emotion, and culture. By delving into the works of scholars like Wierzbicka and Pavlenko, participants will gain insights into the cultural nuances of emotional expression and how language shapes our emotional experiences. 

Throughout the course, students will engage with key topics such as the cross-cultural variations in the expression of fear, anger, and love, and how gestures and body language play a role as another form of communication. Participants will also explore the concept of untranslatable words and how language choice and code-switching impact emotional expression. 

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define how emotions are expressed differently across languages and cultures. Explain the role of cultural context in shaping emotional experiences. Describe the significance of untranslatable words and concepts in understanding emotions. Analyze the impact of language choice and code-switching on emotional expression.

Format:

  • Synchronous + Asynchronous Learning: 10 hours of study time in total, including tests and case studies.
  • Interactive Virtual Meetings: 4 virtual meetings of 1.5 hours each, featuring discussions and breakout sessions on emotional expression and cultural nuances in language.
  • Pre-recorded Video Content: 2 hours of high-quality video content.
  • PDFs and Presentations: Supporting documents and slide decks to aid in the learning process.
  • Tests and Self-assessments: Multiple-choice questions and self-assessments to measure understanding.
